What is it like to be newly diagnosed with HIV?
When someone is first diagnosed they are worried about such things as whom to tell, will they get sick, and how they will afford the medications.
It's natural to feel shock, panic, and/or anger. Many can't believe what has happened to them. Common reactions include feeling confused, scared, desperate, hopeless, numb guilty, ashamed, and sad. For some there is a delayed reaction. Others can accept that they have the virus as soon as they hear the results.
People are advised to avoid making any major life changes right away. The three main parts of learning to live with HIV are getting medical care, protecting self and others, and building support.
Vermont has a variety of organizations that provide support services to people living with HIV/AIDS and their families, HIV specific clinics for medical care, insurance assistance programs, and more.
